In recent years, Tilburg’s city center has undergone a major transformation. What was once a hardscaped downtown area with very little greenery has been redesigned around the Stadsforum and the surrounding center with mature trees and climate-resilient planting. Van den Berk Boomkwekerijen supplied trees for Willemsplein, Stadhuisplein, and several other locations in the city center. In addition to supplying the trees, we also advised on species selection and the layout of the planting sites.
Willemsplein was planted with, among others, Pinus sylvestris, Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase', Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent', and Quercus robur. These species were chosen for their heat tolerance and their ability to perform well in an intensively used urban center with extensive paving.
At other locations in the city center, additional species were used, including Tilia, Sorbus 'Dodong', Cornus mas, Robinia, and Acer saccharinum. The mix of species creates a varied urban green structure that is also climate-resilient in the long term and helps reduce heat stress and improve water infiltration.
