Small tree with a loose, round to fan-shaped crown. Like the species the trunk usually has low branching with several main branches. The old bark is grey and scaling to reveal orange bast. The ovate to elongated leaf has a long pointed tip and single teeth tapering to a point. It is dark green with striking cream-coloured to white margins. The sharp serrated-crenated leaf margins with white edges make the leaves very striking. The tree blossoms with inconspicuous green flowers that are followed by small bean-like fruits. ‘Variegata’ is an ancient cultivar of unidentified origin that has remained rare for a long time. A striking park and solitary tree. Branches with entirely green leaves should be quickly removed.
