'Urban Ruby' is a medium-sized tree with a vase-shaped crown of 10-12 m in height. As with the species Z. serrata, the grey-brown bark peels off after a few years, revealing the orange-brown underbark. The tips of the young branches are slightly overhanging, giving the tree a graceful habit. The ovoid to oblong leaves are up to 9 cm long and dark green. The most striking feature of 'Urban Ruby' is that the young leaves are dark red. In autumn, the leaves turn bronze red to orange-red. Flowering is insignificant and the small, bean-shaped fruits are not very striking either.
'Urban Ruby' is a lovely park tree, but also suitable for use in wide avenues and greenbelts. The fact that the tree grows slightly less vigorously than the species Z. serrata is an advantage. The tree grows in any humous, loamy soil, provided it is sufficiently moist.
'Urban Ruby' was introduced by Hanno Hardijzer from Boskoop before 1993. Hardiness zone 6a.
