Medium-size to large tree with an upright, broad, ovoid crown 8 - 15 m tall. The thin young twigs are grey and bare. The mature bark is equally grey and flakes off in plates to reveal orange to light brown bast. The slightly crooked leaf is oval-elongated to elliptical-elongated and dark green. The leaf margin is serrated-crenated. The top has very rough hair, the underside grey hairs. The leaf feels somewhat leathery. Under favourable conditions, it may turn brown-red in autumn. The tree blossoms during or just after the foliage emerges with inconspicuous green flowers followed by small oval fruits. A beautiful park tree which is also suitable for wide green borders and other wide tracts. Needs protection in harsh winters when young.
