Tilia henryana 'Arnold Select' Tilia henryana 'Arnold Select'

'Arnold Select' is a small to medium-sized tree with a dense, broad oval crown. The tree grows very regularly and clearly more stocky than the species T. henryana. The most striking feature of T. henryana, and therefore also of 'Arnold Select', is its beautifully shaped leaves. This is broad ovoid to heart-shaped with serrate leaf margins where each vein ends in a soft tooth along the leaf margin. The young foliage is pinkish-bronze. The adult leaves are dark yellow-green. The flowers appear in pendulous corymbs and are yellowish-white. When the tree flowers in summer, it attracts many insects.
'Arnold Select' grows in any sufficiently nutritious, permeable soil. The tree has proven to be more hardy than the species T. henryana. As a result, and because of its more regular crown shape, 'Arnold Select' is recommended for wider use in avenues, parks and gardens.
Around 2000, a seedling of Tilia henryana at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, was noticed by Philippe de Spoelbergh of Arboretum Wespelaar in Belgium. He was given material to propagate in Belgium. The tree was named 'Arnold Select' and introduced by Pavia Nursery in Deerlijk, Belgium, in 2003. Hardiness zone 7.
