Taxodium distichum 'Pendens' Taxodium distichum 'Pendens'

'Pendens' forms a large tree of 18 - 30 m in height. The crown is narrowly pyramidal with short, almost horizontally descending side branches. The tips of the twigs hang down slightly, a typical feature of this cultivar. This gives the tree a somewhat more graceful appearance than T. distichum. The bark is fibrous and becomes slightly twisted in later life, spiralling counterclockwise. The needles are on short shoots, which fall off simultaneously in autumn. Unlike Metasequoia (opposite each other), Taxodium has them scattered on the twig. On the long shoots, the foliage is scaly. The foliage emerges bright green; once mature, it is dark green. The autumn colour is orange-brown. Like the species, the bark is fibrous. This cultivar also tolerates moist to wet soil, which will promote the growth of characteristic knee roots. 'Pendens' is an old cultivar distinguished in 1855 from the typical species T. distichum, from which the tree differs in detail. Hardiness zone: 6a
