'Prince Claus' grows slower, but remains narrower than ×Sycoparrotia semidecidua. The tree forms a dense, ovoid crown. The dark grey branches bear glossy dark green leaves that are somewhat leathery to the touch. 'Prince Claus' retains more leaves in winter than ×Sycoparrotia semidecidua. The leaves that do fall off turn greenish yellow to deep yellow in autumn. Flowers open very early in spring. The bundles of red stamens are enclosed by brown petals. When the stamens ripen, the pale yellow pollen becomes visible.
Besides the general ornamental value of ×Sycoparrotia semidecidua, 'Prince Claus' is well suited as a street tree due to its slender growth. The tree does not grow fast, but on the other hand, 'Prince Claus' is disease-free, can be used in paving and tolerates air pollution. Any sufficiently moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil will do.
'Prince Claus' is an originally American selection, brought to the Netherlands as an unnamed plant by Alphons van der Bom and subsequently named with royal permission. Hardiness zone 7.
