Quercus muehlenbergii Quercus muehlenbergii

Quercus muehlenbergii is a large tree with a round crown up to 20 m. In exceptional cases, the tree can grow up to 30 m tall. At a young age, Q. muehlenbergii can grow strongly. The bark is light grey and shallowly grooved or detached in small plates. The leaves are oblong and glossy mid-green to yellow-green on the upper side. The underside is grey-green and thin, felt-like hairs. The leaf margin is shallowly lobed to toothed. The lateral veins always end in a short point, at the apex of each tooth or leaf lobe. The oval acorns measure 1-2 cm and are about half enclosed by the cup. This is studded with thick, hairy scales. The acorns are edible and taste sweet.
Q. muehlenbergii is not a rare species in nature, but is not found anywhere in large numbers. It is a typical species of continental USA and does not occur in coastal areas. The tree therefore does not tolerate sea breezes. Q. muehlenbergii prefers moist but well-drained soils. Nevertheless, the tree also tolerates drought. A neutral to calcareous soil is desirable for good growth.
The wood is hard and durable, but because the tree is not common it is little used.
