A semi-evergreen to full evergreen medium-size tree or large shrub with a round to flat-topped spherical crown, 6 to 12 m tall. Young twigs grey-green and densely hairy. The thick bark is dark grey and deeply grooved. The elongated to narrow elliptical leaves have a variable margin. This varies from smooth-edged to rough serrated. They are dark green on top and lighter with grey hairs on the underside. During severe cold, the leaves turn brown in the winter, only falling when the new leaves emerge. A healthy, warmth-loving tree which prefers a limy soil.
