Prunus avium 'Varikse Zwarte' Prunus avium 'Varikse Zwarte'

'Varik Black' is a sweet cherry with a semi-open crown of 6-8 m in height. The crown is broad ovoid and slightly irregular in shape. In autumn, the leaves turn orange to purplish red. The tree flowers in late April and early May with soft pink blossom. 'Varikse Zwarte' is not self-pollinating, which means that a tree of another cherry variety should be nearby for good fruiting. Preferably, BURLAT, 'Double Meikers' or 'Early Rivers' are used for this purpose. The cherries of 'Varikse Zwarte' are ready for picking in July. They are round and shiny black-red. The flesh is soft, juicy and also dark red. The cherries taste very pleasantly sweet and are only suitable for direct consumption. Because the flesh is very soft, they are more difficult to store. 'Varikse Zwarte' is a Dutch variety introduced around 1900. Hardiness zone 6.
