'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche' is a sweet cherry with a semi-open crown of 6-8 m in height. The crown is broad ovoid and slightly irregular in shape. This cultivar produces beautiful orange to deep red autumn colours. The tree flowers around mid-April to early May with white blossom and is not very self-pollinating. Single trees will produce fruit, but a different cherry variety is needed for good fruiting. Preferably, 'Bigarreau Napoléon' or 'Kordia' is used for this purpose. The cherries of 'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche' are ready for picking around mid-July. They are large and shiny dark red to brownish-red. The flesh is very juicy and pleasantly sweet. The cherries are very suitable for direct consumption, e.g. in desserts.
'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche' was found around 1850 near Stuttgart, Germany. Hardiness zone 6.
