Oxydendrum arboreum is a slow-growing, small- to medium-sized tree that grows 8-10 m tall in cultivation. In the wild, the tree can grow over 25 m tall under ideal conditions. The tree forms an irregular pyramidal crown. The bark is dark grey-brown, with deep longitudinal grooves that become horizontal transverse grooves, creating a block-like structure. The glossy dark green leaves can turn intense deep purplish-red for weeks in autumn before falling off. If the tree is in a sunny location, the autumn colours will be significantly better. Loose panicles of white, urn-shaped flowers appear in July and August. After flowering, it takes until winter for the light greenish-yellow box fruits to turn brown and dry out. When the tree shows its autumn colours, it often still looks like it is flowering, when it is the light-coloured fruits.
