Medium-size tree with a broad ovoid crown 10 to 15 m tall. When mature the branches arch strongly so that the crown becomes broader and almost round. ‘Wisley Bonfire’ has a strikingly regular crown shape. The glossy dark green leaves are oval to obovate and a fraction larger than the species. The leaves are glossy dark green in summer, turning yellow, orange and radiant red over several weeks in autumn. The autumn colours may vary depending on the soil type in which the tree stands. The root growth is deep making transplantation difficult. N. sylvatica grows naturally in marshy sites but it can also thrive well in less moist places.
