'Red Silver' is a moderately strong growing small to medium-sized tree. The open crown is almost round and the tree grows 6-8 m tall. The flower buds are deep purple-brown. In April, the dark purplish-red flowers open and turn a dull dark pink. The flowers are single and about 4 cm in size. The young unfurling leaves of 'Red Silver' are silver-grey hairy, The spring foliage is green-purple, in summer it turns dark green.
In the second half of summer, the approximately 2 cm large ornamental apples ripen. These are dark purple. Red Silver' is a healthy tree that is hardly susceptible to scab. The tree will grow in almost any soil, provided it is well-drained. It can also be used in semi-paved areas. Tolerates wind, but not sea wind. This American cultivar was introduced in 1928. The tree is very hardy, hardiness zone 4.
