Medium-size, single or multi-stemmed tree with an ovoid crown to about 12 m. Grows fairly vigorously when young, but stays compact and densely branching. The young leaves are a deep brownish red on emerging. They turn dark green later in summer. They are elliptical and about 12 cm in size. The fragrant flowers consist of 6 white petals, horizontal when the flowers are fully open and then curling downward. The flowers open around early to late April. Suitable for avenues, parks and gardens.
