Hamamelidaceae

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Silver King' Liquidambar styraciflua 'Silver King'

Large tree with a broad, pyramidal, fairly open crown. The boughs stand at a fairly wide angle to the trunk. The grey bark is grooved. The young twigs are light yellow-green and have hardly any corky fissures. The leaf is glossy grey-green with irregular, creamy white margins and occasionally spots. The inconspicuous flowers are followed by spiky capsules that persist in the winter. Has no real autumn colour, but the green parts turn pinkish, producing an intriguing effect. In the past, various silver and gold coloured cultivars were grown under the name ‘Variegata’. For the sake of clarity, this tree was named ‘Silver King’. Unusual avenue tree for use in parks, wide streets and avenues, or on green belts. Prefers fertile, moist soil: cannot tolerate persisting drought.
