Strong tree with a densely branching, initially narrow pyramidal crown and long, straight central leader. When mature, the branches project more, resulting in an ovoid crown. The grey bark is deeply grooved. Young twigs are light green and covered with conspicuous corky fissures after just a few years. The leaf has 5 lobes and is glossy green. In autumn it turns brownish purple to brownish red. The leaf stays on the tree for a long time before falling. The flowers are inconspicuous. ‘Hapdell’ bears no fruit, making it suitable for use in residential areas and along streets. Prefers fertile, moist soil: cannot tolerate persisting drought.
