Slow growing, small tree with an irregular, round crown, up to about 5 m tall. The young twigs are purplish red, mature branches and the bark light grey and grooved. The imparipinnate leaf grows 20 - 30 cm long and consists of 5 - 9 leaf segments. These emerge glossy red but turn matt purplish red in summer. The blossom and fruit are typical of the species, but ‘Purpurea’ does not generally bear many fruits. Is notably less hardy than other J. regia cultivars. Roots very deeply and much prefers easily penetrable, open soil.
