Medium-size to large tree with a densely branching, broad pyramidal to ovoid crown, about 8 - 10 m tall, sometimes up to 15 m. The ovate leaves are glossy dark green and up to 8 cm long. The margin is very variable: from smooth-edged leaves to very undulate margins with 5 - 7 sharp spikes on each side. The flowers are fairly inconspicuous. They are followed by glossy greenish yellow to golden yellow berries about 8 mm across. This yellow-fruiting cultivar was already being grown in the 18th century. Prefers a humic, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates either acidic or calcareous soil. Also suitable for use as a hedge.
