Halesia carolina 'UConn Wedding Bells' is a small tree with a broad oval crown growing 5-8 m high at a maximum diameter of 6 m. The branches are grey and the old bark is dark grey to black-grey, with shallow lighter longitudinal grooves. The leaves are as in the species H. carolina; oval to ovoid and fresh green. 'UConn Wedding Bells' flowers profusely, even at a young age. The flowers are bell-shaped, white and have a dark yellow heart of stamens. They open significantly further than in the species H. carolina. The flowers are also larger, reinforcing the impression of an even richer bloom. Flowering time April-May.
Was found in Ohio, USA, but introduced in the late 1990s by Mark Brand, University of Connecticut, USA. It is an attractive small tree for use in parks, gardens, squares, cemeteries, etc. Cannot be paved and prefers well-drained, humous soil. Hardiness zone 6a.
