This American selection is a very hardy, male variety with a wide ovoid crown. The thick bark is grey and deeper furrowed than of the F. excelsior and the branches are heavy and brown-grey coloured. The branching is strongly upright creating a compact form with a spread of circa 8 m. The leaf appears late and remains smaller than of the species. It is odd-pinnate with usually 7 leaflets, each circa 10 - 15 cm long. Underneath it is whitish green and in autumn it turns dark wine-red. Often persistent until the first night frost. 'Autumn Applause' roots solidly due to its deep-going pen root, which branches out strongly. It prefers moist soils and has a slight preference for acid soils. Useful tree for many purposes.
