Small tree with a round crown that grows significantly slower and remains smaller than the species. The shoots are conspicuously purplish red on emerging, as is the young leaf. The leaves turn shiny dark green later. In autumn, the leaves turn golden yellow to brownish-yellow. The male flower catkins are cream and conspicuous. The female catkins are significantly shorter, green and inconspicuous. The fruits (sweet chestnuts) are edible. Prefers airy, humic soil.
