Initially grows as a large, fairly slender, vertical shrub, growing later into a small tree with a broader, oval crown. The dark green leaf emerges with a slightly bronze colour. It is somewhat irregular, broadly elliptical and turns yellow and red in autumn. In comparison with other cultivars, the leaf is rather less attractive, but the bright white flowers are strikingly big. This effect is reinforced because they are grouped in somewhat overhanging racemes. They are followed by brownish red, edible fruits. The plant has a reasonable to good fruit yield. ‘Snowflakes’ originated from seed imported from Canada by Proefstation voor de Boomkwekerij in Boskoop (NL). Amelanchier has few soil requirements but grows best in calcareous soil.
