Acer platanoides 'Faassen's Black' Acer platanoides 'Faassen's Black'

Aceraceae

Acer platanoides 'Faassen's Black' Acer platanoides 'Faassen's Black'

Medium-sized tree that can reach a height of 15 - 20 m. The crown is dense and irregular, wide conical. A mature tree can have a crown width of circa 8 m. The unfurling leaf is light red, in summer it turns deep red-brown. 'Faassen's Black' strongly resembles 'Crimson King', but the leaf of 'Faassen's Black' is darker and duller. The tree was selected from the same sowing as 'Crimson King'. The green-yellow flowers appear just before the leaf unfurls. This makes the tree a real harbinger of spring. The unfolding, red leaf makes a bold contrast with the yellow flowers. 'Faasen's Black' grows in any soil, but does not tolerate stagnating groundwater and peaty soil. The tree is good wind resistant. The cultivar A. p. 'Royal Red' is less sensitive to mildew.
