It took six years to transform 25 hectares of contaminated riverside with derelict factories and power station into the University of Northampton’s new flagship. Waterside Campus contains new academic and residential buildings, an energy centre, restored railway buildings and two new major river crossings.
LUC architects made the landscape masterplan for this extensive ecologically inspired public realm and created a series of major new spaces and connecting routes for the 15,000 students and staff who will use it.
Trees and rich flowering borders give the new site, despite its size, a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. Van den Berk Nurseries delivered big size pollard willows. These are used as a sort of gate keepers. We also delivered Quercus palustris, Catalpa bignonioides and Robina pseudoacacia. All are planted in 2017-2018 by Killingley. Due to good plant work and aftercare the regrowth of the trees is very good. An impressive project!
