In 2010, the first phase of the renovation of the historic centre was completed. Plangroep Heggen took care of the design, the working out of the specifications and managed this project. Van den Berk Nurseries supplied the trees. The promenade along the Geul, is embellished with 45 lime trees (Tilia europaea ‘Pallida’, size 40-50). In the narrow pedestrian area, columnar elms (Ulmus ‘Columella’) were planted and solitary Parrotia persica were given a place on a square. A new weeping willow was planted near the hotel Walram, alongside the historic fish ladder in the Geul. This tree grows very quickly because it was provided with a lot of rooting space, filled with good topsoil in its new location.
