In 2023, the market square of Hengelo was redesigned. Where there was once a bare, paved square, a green public space has now been created as part of urban renewal. For this project, trees with a trunk circumference of 30–35 cm and various multi-stemmed trees up to 300–400 cm high were supplied. All trees were planted with a water buffer system.
Each tree was planted in a 30 m² planting pit, equipped with a 15 cm thick layer of stone wool (Rockflow) that can retain up to 96% of its own volume in water. This provides the trees with a water supply for up to six weeks, even during dry periods. A gravel layer at the bottom ensures a capillary break and prevents water accumulation at the roots.
The selection of tree species is based on climate resilience and biodiversity. Supplied species include Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’, Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Semperflorens’, and Koelreuteria paniculata, as well as multi-stemmed trees such as Cornus kousa, ‘China Girl’, Malus toringo, and Amelanchier lamarckii.
The project was awarded the title ‘Most Inspiring Inner City Project in the Netherlands’ in 2023.
