Each day, around 110,000 passengers pass through Rotterdam Centraal Station. At the beginning of this century, the old station building proved no longer to be futureproof and it became clear that it needed replacing. The nine-year-long project was a collaboration between Benthem Crouwel Architekten, MVSA Meyer and Van Schooten Architecten and West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture. The area around the station was also redesigned. The idea was for it literally and figuratively to form a link between the new station and modern, cosmopolitan Rotterdam. The architects chose a highly spacious layout with a large pedestrian forecourt right in front of the main entrance. This forms a distinct hub that leads out to the rest of the city. The trees, which are exclusively sycamores, point the visitor in the right direction. Van den Berk supplied Stadskwekerij Rotterdam with 77 columnar sycamores (Platanus x hispanica ‘Tremonia’) with stem girth of 40-45 cm for this project. In March 2014, the station was officially reopened by King Willem Alexander. It has since been awarded a variety of architecture prizes.
