The 'Plantijn' is a Dutch cultivar that grows vigorously at first. When the tree is older the growth-rate decelerates somewhat. The crown is less columnar than that of 'Lobel'. 'Plantijn' grows at first spherical to broad oval but eventually forms a fan-shaped crown. This is dense and closed with a more or less ascending main trunk and dense lateral branches that grow at something of an angle along the main trunk. Older trees have a number of twigs that droop decoratively. The tree eventually attains a breadth of approx. 6 - 8 m. The leaves are greyish-green and they curl up under dry conditions. In the autumn they turn yellow. This cultivar is little sensitive to Dutch elm disease. 'Plantijn' was found in 1973 at the same time as 'Doedens' and 'Lobel' and is the least wind-resistant of these cultivars.

The right time to plant Ulmus 'Plantijn' is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Ulmus 'Plantijn' with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
