'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' is a small tree with a round crown growing 3-5 m tall. The young twigs are grey-green and the old bark is grey-brown, flaking off slightly in small patches later in life. The broad ovoid leaves are dark green in colour. The flower panicles are relatively narrow, but at 18-28 cm long, they are remarkably large. The individual flowers are about 2 cm in size. The flower buds are dark purple and contrast well with the lighter purple opened flowers. They have a strong and pleasant fragrance. The flowers open in the first half of May.
Syringa vulgaris grows in any nutritious and humus-rich soil. The plant prefers neutral to calcareous soil. 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' is very suitable for use in parks and gardens. Due to the German cultivar name, which is difficult to pronounce in some languages, the plant is sometimes grown as 'Souvenir de Louis Spaeth'.
