Good American selection with a remarkably straight trunk. Grows faster than the species, especially at a young age. The crown shape is broad oval, up to about 5 m wide. The branches and twigs are remarkably green and have many light-coloured lenticels. When broken, they emit an unpleasant odour. The compound leaf is unevenly pinnate and about 25 cm long, the partial leaves are each 2 - 6 cm long and ovate to elliptical. They are somewhat larger than in the species and are harder to the touch. The creamy white to creamy yellow flowers are about 1.5 cm in size and are arranged in terminal panicles that can grow to about 30 cm long. 'Regent' is a good carrier plant and flowers at a young age, often after 6 to 8 years. Is little affected by diseases and infestations. Sophora tolerates drought well.

The right time to plant Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
