Styphnolobium japonicum 'Datiana' Styphnolobium japonicum 'Datiana'

Italian cultivar with striking sinuous twigs and curly leaves. The spherical crown is light and open with branches and twigs that are strikingly green with many, lightly coloured lenticels. The strongly twisting branches emit an unpleasant smell when broken. The older trunk turns grey-brown and is grooved. The leaf is compound, unevenly pinnate and conspicuously curled. It is about 25 cm long and consists of 7 to 17 leaflets. These are each 2 - 6 cm long and ovate. The plant produces no flowers and hence no fruit. The tree suffers little from diseases and infestations and tolerates paving and road salt. Sophora tolerates drought well.
