A decorative selection with a straight trunk and a broad, oval crown later becoming broad ovoid. The crown is significantly more closed in structure than that of the species. Height 15 - 20 m. The greyish brown bark is deeply grooved and the twigs have practically no thorns. The leaves are the same as those of the species. 'Bessoniana' blooms only rarely and the flowers are in more compact clusters than those of the species. The tree has a superficial root system and is somewhat sensitive to wind, but is less susceptible to branch breakage than the other cultivars are. Thanks to its irregular crown shape, 'Bessoniana' is a good street and avenue tree. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
