Pyrus communis 'Doyenné de Comice' Pyrus communis 'Doyenné de Comice'

'Doyenné du Comice' is a strong-growing pear tree with a narrow pyramidal to pyramidal, semi-open crown of 6-10 m in height. The stem branches grow steeply upwards, creating a steeply ascending crown, especially at a young age. The tree flowers with white blossoms around the end of April to mid-May. 'Doyenné du Comice' is not self-pollinating, which means that a tree of another pear variety should be nearby for good fruiting. Preferably, 'Charneux', 'Clapp's Favourite' or 'Conference' is used for this purpose. Doyenné du Comice' pears are large, broad and somewhat irregular in shape. The skin is thin and delicate and yellow-brown in colour. The yellow-white flesh is soft, aromatic and very juicy, almost melting. The flavour is pleasantly sweet. The pears are ready for picking from late September to mid-October. It is an excellent and very popular hand pear for direct consumption, but also suitable for storing for several months. The fruit has alternating years, so the tree is not always equally productive. 'Doyenné du Comice' was introduced in 1849 by Comice Horticole de Maine et Loire in Angers, France. Hardiness zone 5b.
