Pyrus communis 'Clapp's Favourite' Pyrus communis 'Clapp's Favourite'

'Clapp's Favourite' is a strong-growing pear tree with a broad pyramidal, semi-open crown of 4-7 m in height. The stem branches initially grow steeply upwards, but start arching after a few years. The tree flowers with white blossoms around the end of April and early May. 'Clapp's Favourite' is not self-pollinating, which means that a tree of another pear variety should be nearby for good fruiting. Preferably, 'Beurré Hardy', 'Conference' or 'Doyenné du Comice' are used for this purpose. The pears of 'Clapp's Favourite' are quite large and have a green to yellow-green skin, often with a red blush. The flesh is soft and very juicy. It is not very aromatic and the flavour is pleasantly sweet but somewhat bland. The pears are ready for picking early in the season; around the second half of August. It is a hand pear that does not keep and is therefore only suitable for direct consumption. However, the pears can be put in syrup.
'Clapp's Favourite' was found before 1860 by American T. Clapp of Dorchester, Massachusetts and marketed around 1867. Hardiness zone 5b.
