Broad pyramidal, medium-sized tree with a dense, very regular crown to about 10 m high and 5 m wide. The bark is greyish brown, later turning blackish grey and deeply scaly. The young twigs are light brown. They form a good background for the intense light blue-grey needles. These are stiff and spiny and 2 to 3 cm long. The long cylindrical cones are green at first and turn yellow-brown when maturing. This cultivar is very suitable for use in modern designs due to its strikingly regular shape. The trade name also refers to a possible use as a Christmas tree. 'Blue Diamond' is easy to propagate and grows well. The tree has few soil requirements, as long as it is sufficiently nutritious and moist, and desires a sunny location. Tolerates slightly more drought than other species and is resistant to urban climate and air pollution.
