Ostrya carpinifolia 'F.C. Moree' Ostrya carpinifolia 'F.C. Moree'

'F.C. Moree' is a cultivar of the Hop beech, Ostrya carpinifolia. Superficially, O. carpinifolia resembles Carpinus betulus, the hornbeam, but differs from it by its distinctive fruits, which resemble hop cones. 'F.C. Moree' has a regularly branching, pyramidal crown and grows 12-15 m high. The brownish-grey bark is smooth for a long time, but later slightly grooved and with irregular light grey spots. The leaves are as in the species O. carpinifolia; ovate to oval and 5-10 cm long. In autumn they turn yellow. In April, the tree flowers with pendulous catkins, which are followed by the striking fruits, which resemble hop cones.
'F.C. Moree' is an easy-growing tree with few soil requirements. The tree was selected by Bart van de Sluis from Randwijk and named after Frans Moree, then chairman of the Nurserymen's Association Kring Opheusden. Hardiness zone 5b.
