'Jonagold' is a medium-sized apple tree that grows quickly, especially when young. The crown is semi-open and oval. Later in life, the crown is broadly oval to almost round. The tree will grow 6-8 m tall. Light pink flowers open around mid-May. The buds are darker pink. The apples are ready for picking from late September to late October. They are regular in shape, round and very large. The colour is yellow-green with an orange-red, often striped blush. The flesh is yellowish-white, quite juicy to succulent and freshly scented. The apple has a pleasant, fresh-sweet taste. 'Jonagold' is a hand apple that keeps reasonably well. It is important not to pick the fruits too late in the season; they will be redder in colour, but also more mealy and less tasty. 'Jonagold' is very suitable for direct consumption, but also for processing into purée and juice. This cultivar originated in 1943 in Geneva, New York, USA, from a cross between 'Jonathan' and 'Golden Delicious'. In 1968, 'Jonagold' was introduced. Hardiness zone 6.
