Malus domestica 'Golden Delicious' Malus domestica 'Golden Delicious'

'Golden Delicious' is an old but still popular cultivar. The tree is medium-sized with a semi-open, broadly oval to spherical crown. The tree grows 5-7 m tall. The flower buds are pale pink and the flowers, which open in April, are white. Apples can be picked from the last week of September until the end of October. These are medium-sized, very regular in shape and round. In cooler summers, the apples can be more elongated. They are greenish-yellow and later turn more yellow. The flesh is creamy white, juicy and sweet and sour aromatic. The flavour is also slightly acidic, but will become sweeter if the apples are stored longer. 'Golden Delicious' is an excellent hand apple that is also great for pastries and in salads. It is not suitable as a puréeing apple or for juice. 'Golden Delicious' keeps well, but is best as a fresh hand apple. Good cultivar for use in private gardens.
'Golden Delicious' was found as a chance seedling in 1890 by A.H. Mullins, Clay County, West Virginia, USA. This cultivar was commercialised in 1914. Hardiness zone 6.
