Magnolia ×soulangeana 'Alexandrina' Magnolia ×soulangeana 'Alexandrina'

'Alexandrina' is a fine cultivar of the well-known M. ×soulangeana. The tree grows distinctly upright and becomes medium-sized with a height of 6-9 m with a broad oval, later almost round crown. The tree does not flower very abundantly at a young age, but more than makes up for this later. 'Alexandrina' was named in 1831 by the French nurseryman Cels from Montrouge, now a district in Paris, France. Over the years, several clones under the name 'Alexandrina' have entered the market. In the clone grown in Europe, the flowers open in April and early May. They have the typical upright, tulip shape of M. ×soulangeana. The flowers are white, becoming darker purple-red towards the base. The tree is very suitable as a park tree or in larger gardens. Hardiness zone 6b.
