Grows from a shrub into a small or medium-size tree with a broad oval crown. The crown branches very densely. This effect is reinforced by the tough, evergreen leaf. The leaves are dark olive green and slightly bulbous. They are smooth-edged or have a few small prickles on the top half of the lamina. The flowers are single in the leaf axils. They are female, small and inconspicuous. They are followed by numerous glossy red, fleshy drupes (commonly called berries) with a diameter of 8 - 10 mm. Prefers a humic, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates either acidic or calcareous soil. As well as its use as a solitary tree in parks and in gardens, ‘J.C. van Tol’ is an excellent hedge plant.
