TIANSHAN is initially a shrub form, growing into a small multi-stemmed tree in later life. H. miconioides develops a broad vase-shaped to rounded habit and a height and diameter of 4-6 m. The bark is yellow-brown and flakes off beautifully in narrow strips. The oblong-ovate leaves are dull mid-green and always have three main veins; a very characteristic feature of H. micionioides. The white flowers open in September and are in stout panicles. Each apex flower on the branching plume is surrounded by a wreath of 3-7 flowers. This feature has earned the species the Dutch name Seven-Sun Tree. After flowering, the calyxes continue to grow and turn purple-red for several weeks during autumn. TIANSHAN has all the characteristics of the species H. miconioides, but grows slightly more compact and flowers more abundantly, especially when young. Grows in almost any soil, provided it is sufficiently nutritious and moist. Hardiness zone: 5
