Bushy, sturdy shrub to small tree about 3 m high and 4 m broad, with a broad, fan-shaped, densely branching crown. The plant naturally forms an attractive, regular crown. The somewhat glossy, dark green leaf turns yellow to light red in autumn. The flowers, measuring about 3.5 cm, open around January/February. The flowers are brownish red with purple hue and have no fragrance. The flowers are somewhat lighter than in ‘Diane’, and the tree does not blossom as profusely every year. When the newly named cultivars of H. x intermedia were introduced after WW2, ‘Ruby Glow’ was the first red-blossoming one.
