Small tree with a more or less round, loose, open crown. Height 6 - 8 m. The trunk is grey and has shallow fissures. 'Rubylace' is a variety with no spines. The young leaf is strikingly brown red and turns through bronze green to green in summer. It is compound and pinnate or twice-pinnate, single leaflets are circa 2 cm. The inflorescence is inconspicuous. 'Rubylace' is a popular cultivar due to its decorative foliage. The tree is deep rooting with many rootlets. Tolerates hard surfacing. Winter hardiness zone : 5a
