Fairly slow growing, large shrub to small or medium-size tree. Rarely taller than 10 m under cultivation. The densely branching crown is a broad ovoid, often already branching at low level. The axillary and terminal panicles consist of male and female flowers. These are white and very decorative. Is closely related to F. ornus but differs in its denser branch pattern, smaller leaf, narrower leaf segments and the glandular hairs on bud scales, leaf stems and flower clusters. Attractive park tree, prefers somewhat drier, preferably calcareous soil and a warm, sunny position.
