Fagus sylvatica 'Purple Fountain' is a narrow upright tree with a central leader and a height of circa 12 m. The limbs droop down loosely and the spread is circa 2.5 m. The oval to ovate leaves are red brown and 4 - 9 cm. 'Purple Fountain' has a smaller leaf than 'Black Swan' and the colour of the leaf is less dark than 'Purpurea Pendula' and 'Black Swan'. The leaf on the young shoots is strikingly red. The tree is used as a specimen tree and due to its narrow shape extremely suitable for smaller gardens. 'Purple Fountain' grows well in a calcareous soil that is moisture-retentive and well-drained. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
