This hawthorn grows from a large shrub to a tree with low branches. Because the branches hang down somewhat the tree forms a broad compact crown. Height 6 to 8 m. The bark is greyish-brown and flakes off in platelets. Young twigs are somewhat reddish and often bear sturdy thorns. The lobed, deeply incised leaves are dark green and turn yellow in the autumn. Flower umbels appear in May with single white and sweetly scented florets. Small dull red drupes follow in the autumn. Used as a park tree and in landscape settings: often also used in hedges. Should preferably be lightly pruned because of the ease with which suckers are formed. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
Crataegus monogyna can eventually reach a height of 6-8 m, depending on the site and climate conditions.

The right time to plant Crataegus monogyna is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Crataegus monogyna with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
