Small tree with a layered, horizontal branching pattern that produces a striking habit. The crown eventually becomes as broad as it is tall. The young twigs turn from green to greenish brown. The alternating leaves are irregularly shaped, and the silvery white margins make the tree particularly decorative. The young leaf has a somewhat pinkish hue. The large, umbel-shaped flower corymbs can be followed by small, dark blue berries. However, the fruit yield is very variable and certainly not guaranteed in certain regions. Shallow rooting with a fine root system. Because the sap starts flowing early in the year, pruning should be done in summer or autumn.

The right time to plant Cornus controversa 'Variegata' is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Cornus controversa 'Variegata' with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
