Carpinus japonica 'Chinese Lantern' Carpinus japonica 'Chinese Lantern'

'Chinese Lantern' is a densely branched small tree with a round crown to about 8-10 m in height. Although the tree grows somewhat erratically, it still has a distinctly rounder crown than the species C. japonica. The leaves are narrowly ovate to oval, about 8-10 cm long and distinctly veined. They are dark green and give the tree a vital appearance. The flowering is not very conspicuous, the fruit catkins all the more so. These are relatively broad and, with some imagination, resemble Chinese lanterns. An additional advantage is that as a tree, 'Chinese Lantern' produces many fruiting catkins at a young age.
Has few soil requirements but grows best in a nutritious loamy soil. Was marketed in 1981 by Koninklijke Kwekerijen Alphons van der Bom, Oudenbosch. Hardiness zone 7a
