Aralia elata 'Variegata', like the green-leaved species A. elata, this variegated variant is also a very characteristic tree. It has more or less the same growth form as the green-leaved species and grows with relatively few, thick branches into a vase-shaped, later round tree of about 5 m. Initially, the tree grows vase-shaped, but at a later age the growth length decreases and the crown becomes round. The thick branches are strongly spiny. The double-pinnate leaves are very large, sometimes up to more than a metre long. They consist of up to 80 partial leaves that are green with narrow creamy-white margins. The autumn colours are yellow to orange-red with the white-white parts turning redder. Large panicles of creamy white flowers appear in August, sometimes followed by small black fruits. The flowers are crowded by bees. Like A. elata, 'Variegata' prefers a somewhat sheltered spot in full sun or semi-shade. The tree can form a lot of root storage through underground shoots, which can be a nuisance in some cases. Prevent the tree from catching a lot of wind; the large compound leaves are easily damaged. Plant the tree in nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil that is sufficiently moist, even though temporary drought is well tolerated. Beautiful solitary tree or for use in small groups in parks, gardens, cemeteries, etc. Has high architectural value and is an excellent gestation plant. Hardiness zone 5
